As I've mentioned before, I originally got involved with home improvement products very early on in my training and career. I went to school for Product Design and ultimately created many of the types of products you see on sale each day at BULX. Sinks, faucets, bathtubs, toilets - you name it. The artistic side of the trade was fantastic; I was able to turn my ideas into physical goods.

But as a designer, I always battled with an ethical dilemma. You see, most companies purposely design their lower-end models (be it cars, electronics, housewares, computers, etc.) to "look" cheaper. It's hard to imagine that a company would sabotage their own brand like that, but it makes sense if you consider the following...

If all of the products in a line look the same - and the only difference is price - most people will buy the cheaper version. The way many companies combat this is to make the more expensive models "look" more expensive.

As a result, retail buyers are forced to decide if they want to buy
the uglier, cheaper version or the nicer, more expensive option.

I got tired of asking myself, "Why do people have to chose? Shouldn't good design be available to everyone?"
